What is the EBC?

We are 13 communities of nuns and monks who live according to the Rule of St Benedict. The English Congregation is the most ancient of the 21 national congregations that together make up the Order of St Benedict throughout the world.

How do I navigate the site?

The site is very simply organised and can be easily navigated by use of the link-bar at the foot of each page, or via the Contents page.

What does the site contain?

There is a message of welcome from the President of the Congregation, as well as brief descriptions of our history and our way of life. Of course there are also pages devoted to each of the independent communities in the EBC, nine of which are in England, one in Wales, and three in the United States of America.

Who designed the site, and why?

The site was designed by a team of monks appointed by the then President of the Congregation, Abbot Francis Rossiter. The original design team were Abbot Mark Jabalé from Belmont, Father Wilfrid Sollom from Douai, Father Patrick Fludder from Worth and Brother Boniface Huddlestone from Ampleforth.

By visiting the site we hope that you will find out more about our monasteries, the nuns and monks who live, work and pray there, and why we are carrying the centuries-long traditions of monastic life into the twenty-first-century.

Why do the graphics look strange?

Anyone using an AOL browser may experience a reduction in clarity of the images. This is due to the extra compression of images used by the AOL cache. For information on how to get around this problem, please follow this link.

We hope that you enjoy your visit to our website and that you will take the opportunity to visit the websites of our individual communities as well. May God’s blessings be with you and your family.
